WEEKLY SUMMARY OF HONG KONG PRESS REPORTS AND COMMENTS. August 39, 1947.

1.

CHINA.

There was noticeably less comment than usual on Chinese affairs during the week under review.

The "Wah Kiu Yat Po" of August 5 asserted that it was clear that American aid for China would follow the Wedemeyer mission, and said that such aid should serve to keep the peace in the Far East and prevent the spread of communism.

The "Kung Sheung Daily News" of August 6 warned against placing too much reliance on American aid. It pointed out that America gave help to China in pursuance of her policy of checking Russia, and American foreign. policy might easily change; furthermore the continuance of such aid might be affected by an economic crisis in America or by the results of the 1948 elections. The Chinese Government was urged to devote more attention to economic recovery and not to concentrate entirely on the prosecution of the civil war.

The National Times" of August 9, commenting on the forthcoming visit to China of the British parliamentary goodwill mission, said that Sino-British relations had entered a "bright period".

2.

HONG YOG

Something of a sensation was caused by the closing on August 6 of the Tson Ho Bank, one of the chief Chinese banks in Hong Kong, with branches in Shanghai and elsewhere in China. High officials of the Chinese Government were said to be connected with it. This bank was said to have lost $2,000,000 through speculation in Chinese currency and gold bullion. It was stated that the bank would probably reopen shortly.
